Hello Patrons of the Hackettstown Free Public Library!
May is in full bloom and we have an exciting array of things happening at the library. Thanks to the Warren County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs we are able to bring you an 8-event slate of programs focusing on textiles called "Textile Arts Unraveled." These will be taking place throughout the rest of the year, but space is limited so please register now and mark it in pen on your calendar!
We have new continuing programs, including an Aspiring Writers Club hosted by Hackettstown's own Eric Matluck, and eco-craft events from the Musconetcong Watershed Association and Americorps. Also, learn all about herb gardens at our bilingual "Herb Gardens for Beginners" program hosted by PEACE NJ and Hackettstown Habla Español Tambien.
On April 9, our children's department was officially renamed the Laura Ann Uhl Memorial Children's Room, in honor of our former employee Laura who worked here for almost two decades and passed away at the end of last year. Laura was, and remains, a big part of our family here at the library and the Hackettstown community at large. Anyone who knew her is surely blessed. Please join us in honoring Laura by visiting the children's room of the wonderful library she held dear.
Of course our calendar of events is full of other amazing goings-on, so please take a look and register for anything that interests you.
Come and visit us soon! We can’t wait to see you!

Speaking Yiddish to Chickens: Holocaust Survivors on South Jersey Poultry Farms
New Jersey is the Garden State and as the name implies, we have a rich history of agriculture that has helped define our state. An important group of people who contributed to this history were European Jews who emigrated here during the Twentieth Century, particularly Holocaust survivors after World War 2. In celebration of Jewish Heritage Month, please join author Seth Stern as he discusses his work “Speaking Yiddish to Chickens: Holocaust Survivors on South Jersey Poultry Farms,” the first book to chronicle how roughly 1,000 Holocaust survivors – including the author’s grandparents – found an unlikely refuge and gateway to new lives as poultry farmers in southern New Jersey. This book relies on interviews with dozens of these refugee farmers and their children, as well as oral histories and archival records. This is their remarkable story of loss, renewal, and perseverance in the most unexpected of settings.

As graduation dates creep ever closer, the NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority is committed to arming students and parents with the information necessary to understand repaying student loans and how to pay for graduate school. The feelings of joy and accomplishment after graduation can quickly fade as the real world of financial obligations start to set in. Please join us as Jamillah Barker from the HESAA will cover important things that all college graduates (and their parents!) should know, including credit scores, student loan repayment programs, aggregate loan limits, and the cost of law and medical school.

Creating a Compelling College Application this Summer
We are offering this Zoom presentation to help high school juniors and their parents understand how to use the upcoming summer productively to create a compelling college application.
We will cover the college application process including current admissions trends, writing the personal statement essay and supplemental essays, teacher recommendations and how students can position themselves to increase their chances for admission.
We’ll discuss how a student’s ability to express their insights, experiences and personal growth through their application essays are more important than ever before.
We will discuss application strategies including the advantages and disadvantages of early decision, early action and regular decision. We’ll review what factors students should consider in deciding whether or not to submit their standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) for test-optional colleges and universities. We’ll also discuss the different ways that students can be admitted to a particular school.
We’ll examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission.
We will also discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others.
This program is a detailed and strategic overview of what students should focus on to make their college applications compelling.

The Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks: Contrasts in Command: McClellan Finds a Scapegoat
For most students of the Civil War, the only factor they can recall of the May 31, 1862, Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks, is that the battle resulted in Confederate General Robert E. Lee rising into command of Confederate armies in the east. What many fail to realize is just how close the Confederacy came to complete victory and how the battle became a near disaster for Union General George B. McClellan. Be it a disaster avoided or a lost opportunity, the fact remains the Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks remains one of the most mis-understood battles of the American Civil War.
