Hello Patrons of the Hackettstown Free Public Library!
November is here and with that, Thanksgiving! In the spirit of thanks, I would like to use this space to highlight our Friends of the Hackettstown Library organization.
The Friends of the Hackettstown Library is a volunteer 501c(3) nonprofit that supplements the library’s budget beyond the funds we receive from the town and state through taxes. They run fundraising events like the upcoming Holiday Mini Bazaar on 12/7 and 12/8. They also have an annual book sale in the spring. If you have any interest in helping out your local library but don’t know how, please consider joining the Friends of the Hackettstown Library. They can always use more help and will be very thankful for your contribution, no matter how big or small. The members are working on exciting new ways to raise funds and the profile of the library in our community!
We have two local authors coming on 11/14 to talk about and sell copies of their books. The first is Phyllis Cutler whose book, “Toby” is a children’s story about her dog. There will be books for sale and a dog craft that young readers can do!
The second is Starr Diethorn who will be discussing and selling her book, “Death at Wildbough.” The plot is as follows: When a former code breaker moves to a small town in the Berkshires, the last thing she expects is to fall in love and catch a killer.
To keep it local one more time, in conjunction with Centenary University’s Taylor Memorial Library, we are going to be screening the horror film “House of White Spiders.” This movie was filmed in Hackettstown and the stars will be attending to host a Q&A session. This can’t be missed! Be aware this event is taking place at Taylor Memorial Library, 400 Jefferson St., Hackettstown.
We have a full schedule of great programs coming up this month so please check our calendar of events.
Come and visit us soon! We can’t wait to see you!

Did the Civil War Resolve the Constitutional Issue of Secession?
The United States Constitution is silent on the issue of secession and it remains silent even after passage of the so-called Civil War Amendments which were intended to reflect the changes in the structure of the national government as a result of the Civil War. We will examine whether the Civil War resolved the constitutional issue of secession separate and apart from the destruction of the institution of slavery.
While there are medical conditions that can affect both men and women, there are a host of issues that are only specific to men. In a survey released by the Cleveland Clinic in 2022, 55% of men say they do not get regular health screenings; this is more prevalent among men of color (white, 53% vs. non-white, 63%). Regardless of the reason, it is important for men to take their health seriously and understand some common medical conditions that can directly affect them. Please join us as Dr. Eddie Akrout, Board Certified Family Medicine Physician from Capital Health, discusses:
Principles of Screenwriting for Film with Steven Kampmann
Steven will present a workshop detailing the principles of screenwriting. He will also provide pointers for those looking to break into Hollywood, drawing from his long and storied career. Steven graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and earned his Master’s Degree in Psychological Counseling from St. Michael’s College in Vermont where he wrote his thesis on a method of recording dreams. At the Vermont State Hospital he studied the art of role-playing, humor, and psychodrama in group therapy.
